SA Polocrosse Club Champs to be held on South Coast
June 03, 2011
Untitled Document PADDOCK Polocrosse Club have been selected to host the 2011 South African Polocrosse Championships which will be held in Paddock from August 4.
Over 250 players from 36 clubs country wide will descend upon Paddock for the four day event, which is considered as one of the most important sporting events on the national equestrian calendar.
Polocrosse- for the uninitiated – is one of the fastest growing equestrian sports in the world. One of the reasons for it growing popularity is that each rider only needs one horse per game as opposed to the more expensive sports of polo, where players need at least five horses in order to compete. The game could be described as a combination of polo and lacrosse where riders use a cane stick to carry the rubber ball to score between the goal posts of the opposing team.
The sport is also very family oriented as children play and compete in the game from extremely early ages. It is as much of a spectator sport – to observe over-enthusiastic parents shouting their support next to the field – as it is to watch this exciting game.
The chairperson, Ryan Pretorius, and Committee of the Paddock Polocrosse Club, who are tasked with organising this national event, plan to involve as many community members as possible to ensure a fun-filled and exciting event. One of the events planned is a Cowboy Evening on the Friday night, complete with a mechanical bull and spit braai. Other attractions include a cycling race on the Saturday morning plus a host of stalls selling local produce and crafts.
Any establishments wishing to offer special discounts on accommodation and any local entrepreneurs who would like to put up stalls over this period should contact the club secretary on 082 826 2015 or e-mail paddockpolocrosse@gmail.com
