Our beaches are amongst the best in the world and flying the blue flag to prove it.
The Blue Flag recognises our excellent amenities, cleanliness, safety and environmental standards providing excellent swimming, diving and surfing beaches. Divers, surfers, kite surfers, kayakers, paddlers, boaters, anglers and swimmers enjoy the warm tropical waters concealing infinite sea treasures. The best time of year is all the time – 365 days a year.
The South Coast offers visitors a choice of quiet and secluded beaches, safe family beaches and party zone beaches all within close proximity.
This town is “base camp” for scuba divers from around the world. 5 km’s offshore lies the Aliwal Shoal – a fossilised sand dune of sponges, soft and hard coral. This was ranked as one of the world’s top 10 dive sites by the legendary Jacques Costeau.

Just south of Umkomaas is a sheltered surfing and bathing beach at Widenham.
SCOTTBURGH & PARY RYNIE
Scottburgh is a beautifully situated resort town with an expansive bathing beach manned year-round by lifeguards and fully shark netted. Scottburgh and Park Rynie beach offers some of the best amenities for holiday makers of all ages.
This is our coast’s original – but obviously no longer – “Secret Spot” for surfers who travel the world in search of uncrowded point breaks.

Part of the district of Pennington which incorporates quiet beaches and beautiful bays perfect for fishing and swimming
Mtwalume has a ski boat launch and is well known for it’s excellent rock fishing.
Hibberdene Beach has pilot Blue Flag Status and provides delightful shaded family picnic spots. The wide stretch of shoreline offers interesting rock pools.
MELVILLE, BANANA BEACH, SUNWICH PORT & ANERLEY
Melville is an ideal fishing spot that offers many rock pools and is within walking distance of Banana Beach which is a glorious bathing beach with tidal pools.
Southport Beach is a popular and safe beach all year round.
Umtentweni beach caters for young and old with three different bathing beaches and a popular beach kiosk.
Port Shepstone Beach is long and wide with spectacular rock formations and excellent rock angling.
Shelly Beach is a popular ski boat launching site and a favourite for fishing, dolphin and whale watching excursions. This site is also a favourite for divers who head offshore to another world class dive site Protea Banks.
St Michaels is one of the best point breaks and definitely qualifies as one of the finest local and international surfer’s beaches. A favourite destination for surfing competitions.
Uvongo is famous for its 23m waterfall that plunges into one of the deepest lagoons in the country.
This mile long blue flag beach has been attracting visitors to the South Coast for 100 years. Margate has long held the coveted title of the nation’s favourite holiday destination and visitors can always anticipate an exciting line up of entertainment day and night.
Another of our proud Blue Flag Beaches, Ramsgate Beach offers a quiet family beach for a pleasant day out.
Southbroom is a holiday maker’s playground. It has 3 beaches, a glorious shoreline and is a delight for surfers, wind surfers and kite surfers. Most recently Granny “Hotel” Beach has been upgraded and is 100% wheel chair friendly.
Also a firm favourite with kite surfers. Marina Beach boasts Blue Flag Status.
Unique fossil beds going back 1000’s of years can be found in the Mpenjati Reserve.
Palm Beach is reputed to be one of the best Wind Surfing beaches along the eastern coast. Shell Collectors will never be disappointed.
A firm favourite for anglers, Port Edward offers a wealth of fun with line and rod. Port Edward is one of the best ski boat launch sites on the coast.
