The South Coast Has 2 Of The Top 10 Dive Sites In The World
Aliwal Shoal, a fossilised sand dune lying 4km out to sea off Umkomaas. This dive site offers a great variety of marine life from Nudibranchs to Manta Rays. For the experienced diver there are also two wrecks worth exploring, the “PRODUCE” and “NEBO”. Sightings of the ragged tooth shark are almost guaranteed in the winter months when they congregate at the shoal to mate.
For the Shark enthusiast, Protea Banks, 8km offshore from Shelly Beach is not to be missed! In the summer months divers get the opportunity to dive with Bull ( Zambezi) Sharks, while hammerheads are often spotted over head. Tiger, Blacktip and Guitar sharks also frequent this reef. In the winter months divers get he chance to dive with Ragged Tooth Sharks. Protea Banks is also renowned for a variety of gamefish including Barracuda, Yellowtail, Kingfish and Potato Bass.
Protea Banks is reserved for experienced divers with the Southern and Northern Pinnacles as the two hot spots.
Landers, is positioned off a small town called Rocky Bay which has an exclusive beach and is about 16km south of Umkomaas. Much like Aliwal Shoal a group of reefs lie between 2 0 4km offshore. The dive site is deeper and ranges between 20 – 40 m and it is advisable to have an advanced qualification. It also has drop offs, gullies and overhangs. These reefs are almost untouched.
The pleasant all year round climate, the warm clear water and excellent infrastructure and facilities offer divers a unique experience in both summer and winter. The warm Agulhas current that flows down the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast ensures that the water seldom drops below 20 degrees, summer or winter.
